CHES 2027: Eligibility, Exam Timing, Fees and a Practical Study Plan

Nov 1, 2026
Prepare for the next CHES examination, April 22–May 1, 2027: audit academic eligibility, rehearse the question-block boundary, choose practice across nine areas, check registration fees, interpret a worked case, and include explanation review in your study budget. Independent educational guidance; no passing outcome is promised. Full CHES guide: https://open-exam-prep.com/blog/ches-exam-guide-2026 Free CHES practice questions: https://open-exam-prep.com/practice/ches Facts checked October 30, 2026. NCHEC specifies 175 questions: 150 scored and 25 unidentified pilot questions. Three testing hours include the optional ten-minute break. Questions 1–88 precede the break; questions 89–175 follow it. After starting that final question block, you cannot return to the first. Taking the full break leaves 170 minutes for questions. This is testing time, not a claim about total appointment length. An accredited bachelor's degree or higher is required PLUS an explicit health-education major OR qualifying coursework. The coursework route requires at least 25 semester credits or 37 quarter hours, grade C or better. Process minimum: 12 semester/18 quarter; topic maximum counted: 9/14; other maximum counted: 6/8. NCHEC determines eligibility. The example assumes otherwise qualifying content and grades: 12 process + 10 topic + 3 other semester credits becomes 12 + 9 + 3 = 24 after the topic cap. For April 2027, early registration (Nov 1–30, 2026) costs $250 for eligible students/$300 for nonstudents; regular (Dec 1, 2026–Jan 31, 2027) costs $310/$360; late (Feb 1–28, 2027) costs $385/$435. The newer portal notice specifies opening Nov 2, 2026, afternoon Eastern Time, although the fee schedule starts Nov 1. Student pricing requires current enrollment in at least 9 semester credits or 12 quarter hours, OR documented full-time status as defined by the institution. Fees include a $100 nonrefundable processing portion for ineligible or withdrawing applicants. Preparation and later maintenance costs are separate. Nine-area weights guide practice priorities, not exact question counts. Our evaluation case is fictional: 32/40=80% among respondents, but 32/45≈71.1% of enrollees; a target of 36 enrollees demonstrating the skill was not met. Do not infer a causal effect from this result alone. The 10-week, 80-hour study schedule is an adjustable editorial example. Week nine uses 4 hours of self-paced practice (including chosen breaks), 3 hours reviewing explanations, and 1 hour repairing gaps. The 4-hour practice allocation is not the 3-hour exam limit. Timed rehearsal replaces planned work; review remains outside the testing clock.
